Koo Bon-hyuk is the first Korean batter to hit a walk-off grand slam in 31 years

Koo Bon-hyuk 27, LG Twins, who only hit two home runs since his professional debut in 2019, drew a thrilling career-high arch with a real record. He hit a finishing grand slam for the first time in 31 years as a native hitter in the twin corps, and raised LG to the first place in this category alone.

Koo Bon-hyuk led his team to an 8-4 victory by hitting a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning against the 2024 Shinhan Bank SOL Bank KBO League KT Wiz at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on the 6th.

Koo Bon-hyeok, who played as a substitute in the top of the ninth inning, had his first chance to hit with the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. He then pulled KT closer Park Young-hyun’s fastball at the count of two balls to hit a big hit over the left fence.

Koo Bon-hyuk, who had his first walk-off hit in the bottom of the 11th inning of extra time against the NC Dinos in Jamsil on the 4th, even experienced a walk-off grand slam two days later.

Notably, a walk-off grand slam is a milestone that has been recorded only 23 times in the KBO league history. Among LG hitters, only six including former MBC hitters Lee Jong-do 1982, Kim Young-jik 1992, Choi Hoon-jae 1993, Roberto Petazini 2009, Roberto Ramos 2020, and Koo Bon-hyeok made it. If the scope is narrowed down to a native LG batter, it will be the first time in 31 years since Choi Hoon-jae hit.

Since joining LG, Koo Bon-hyuk has had excellent defense skills, such as playing as a backup infielder, but his batting ability has declined. Until last year, the overall batting average of the first division remained at 0.163, and out of 34 hits, he had only six long balls two homers, one triple, and three doubles.

However, while serving in the military athletic unit Sangju Sangmu between 2022 and 2023, he opened his eyes to batting by strengthening his physical stamina. His batting average reached 0.308 112 hits in 364 times at bat during his two seasons at the Sangmu FC.

Having gained confidence, Koo has surely changed this year. He has also strengthened his chances to load the bases. He had no hit in seven times at bat until last year when he had the bases loaded, but this year he became a “man on base” with two hits one homer and five RBIs in two times at bat.

He also has a batting average of 0.429 six hits in 14 times at bat in this season’s batting average. He has the second highest batting average in his team, following Choi Seung-min and Heo Do-hwan both 0.500, one hit in two times at bat. If the batting average is narrowed down to more than four times at bat, there is no LG batter with better batting performance than Koo Bon-hyuk.

Thanks to Koo Bon-hyuk’s shot, LG also became the lone player with the most walk-off grand slam in the team. The second place is the Samsung Lions with five homeruns. 안전놀이터 추천
