KCC and Jeonju City’s ‘New Home Stadium Construction’ Cramped. Active review of relocation to KCC home

The “conflict over the construction of a new home stadium” between KCC and Jeonju City in men’s professional basketball is heading for a disruption.

An official from a professional basketball team said on the 16th, “I understand that KCC and Jeonju City have crossed the Rubicon River over the relocation of the new home stadium.” Jeonju City has virtually scrapped its promise to build a new home stadium, and is pushing to build a new baseball stadium on the premise of attracting the Futures League in the second division of professional baseball. Jeonbuk National University, which owns the site of Jeonju Indoor Gymnasium, which KCC is using as its home stadium, also conveyed its position to KCC to vacate the gym by 2025.

KCC, which boasts strong power, including professional basketball icon Heo Woong, Choi Joon-yong, Song Kyo-chang, Lee Seung-hyun, and Ra Gun-ah, is a strong candidate for this season and the most popular club in men’s professional basketball.

However, it is known that Jeonju City is actively considering relocating its hometown due to its failure to fulfill its promise.

KCC has already actively pushed for the relocation of Suwon’s hometown after the 2015-2016 season. At that time, former Jeonju Mayor Kim Seung-soo visited the club’s leadership and promised to build a new gym, saying that he would stay. Former Mayor Kim made an official promise at a press conference in April 2016. In the end, KCC canceled the relocation of Suwon’s hometown, which is home to Seosuwon Chilbo Gymnasium (currently Suwon KT Arena), and chose to stay in Jeonju.

In March 2019, Jeonju City planned to invest a total of 52.2 billion won in the site next to Jeonju World Cup Stadium to build a new stadium with one basement floor, three floors above ground, and 6,000 seats. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in March last year with the aim of completing it in 2023, but there has been no progress since then.

The situation has completely changed since Woo Bum-ki, the new mayor, was elected in last year’s local elections. Jeonju City is currently seeking to build a track and field and baseball stadium with the aim of completing it in 2024 on the site of Jangdong Complex Sports Town with a total project cost of KRW 142.1 billion. The stadium has 10,082 seats, and the baseball stadium, which is scheduled to have an indoor practice range, has 8,179 seats. The construction of a new basketball court itself has become unclear as the new mayor’s policy priorities have been pushed by track and field and baseball fields. ‘

In addition, Jeonbuk National University, which owns the site of Jeonju Indoor Gymnasium, which KCC is using as its home stadium, recently conveyed its position to KCC to vacate the gym by 2025.

A professional basketball official said, “I understand that Jeonju City has made a vague order to KCC to move its home stadium to areas near Jeonju City, including Gunsan, until the new basketball court is built. From KCC’s point of view, the construction of a new stadium is unclear, and Jeonbuk National University’s request has been made, making it difficult for them to move forward.

An official from KCC said, “I regret that I couldn’t make a decision eight years ago. “I want to build a nest in a place where I plan on long-term development and focus only on the game,” he said. In fact, KCC and Jeonju City admitted to the collapse of the new home stadium.

KCC moved from Daejeon to Jeonju in 2001. Jeonju has become the “Mecca of professional basketball,” with Lee Sang-min as the most popular star of the time. Even at this point, Jeonju City has a strong image of a “basketball city,” centering on popular stars such as Heo Woong, Choi Joon-yong, and Song Kyo-chang. However, the relationship between KCC and Jeonju City seems to have crossed the Rubicon River due to the conflict over the construction of a new home stadium. 스포츠중계
