Choi Won-kwon criticizes foreign strikers: “You need to play for your life, even if you don’t score”

Head coach Choi Won-kwon urged foreign strikers to step up.

Daegu FC and Ulsan Hyundai played to a goalless 0-0 draw in the 25th round of the Hana OneQ K League 1 2023 at DGB Daegu Bank Park on Friday. Daegu (34 points) overtook Daejeon Hana Citizen (33 points) for sixth place.

After the match, head coach Choi Won-kwon said, “It’s disappointing. I’m sorry we couldn’t get three points for the home fans. The players did well as they prepared. Hong Chul and Cho Jin-woo tested positive for COVID-19, and Ringer also got hit. The strikers didn’t score and we need to improve. I kept asking the foreign players, who are paid more, to work harder. I’m very disappointed and angry. I’m very happy with our buildup and counterattack.”

During one of their late-game counterattacks. “For the team to win, the strikers have to play,” Choi said. We are not a team that creates many chances. The forwards have to play with their lives. Even if they don’t score, they need to work hard. We will still have chances. We don’t have the resources. I will train them.”

Daegu will play two away matches against Incheon United and FC Seoul. “Our attacking style won’t change,” Choi said. Sejingya played 90 minutes and Go Jae-hyun didn’t play. There are things we can do through time distribution. We will consider the combination 안전놀이터 of players and their condition. Especially the game against Seoul is not easy. August and September are our last chances, and the only way is to give 120 percent.”

Goalkeeper Oh Seung-hoon made several saves. In second-half stoppage time, he denied Lee Chung-yong a perfect chance. Choi said, “He’s a player with a lot of responsibility. I’m grateful to him. I’m grateful to Seung-hoon, but I think the defenders who gave up those chances need to work harder.”
