Late announcement of MIP and Six Man Award acceptance criteria changes

SK Oh Jae-hyun is greeting the fans.
Both the timing of the announcement and the acceptance criteria are unfortunate.

The Korea Basketball Federation KBL set the criteria for candidates for the Skills Development Award MIP and Sixman Award, which will be applied from the 2023-2024 professional basketball regular season. The Skills Development Award MIP and the Sixman Award are decided through a vote of reporters by recommending one candidate for each team. According to the new criteria, MIP excludes all-time winners of the Most Valuable Player MVP, Best 5, Rookie Award, and Skills Development Award. The Sixman Award has decided to exclude the starting players from ⅓ games 18 games or more in the regular league and the winners of the MVP, Best 5, and Rookie Award.

Lost motivation

The issue has been decided since the announcement was made. In fact, the decision was made after a meeting of secretaries-general and a board of directors held before the opening of the season. However, the announcement was made ambiguously. In March, when the regular season was in full swing, KBL belatedly notified the public of the change in award criteria. Moreover, KBL made public the announcement by inserting a change in award criteria at the end of the press release for the fifth round settlement of accounts. It seemed as if it was in a hurry to hide the situation. Players who had set their own goals for the sudden announcement were also disappointed. It is hard to understand why the announcement was made at the end of the fifth round of the season.

Most of all, the change in the award criteria excluded the most promising candidates. The main character is Oh Jae-hyun. This season, Oh Jae-hyun properly announced his true worth. He entered the professional league as the first choice in the second round of the 2020 Rookie of the Year draft. Although he did not receive much attention, he won the Rookie of the Year award with his extraordinary efforts from his debut season. And he succeeded in another development this season. His offense was disappointing compared to his outstanding defense skills, but he overcame it with his efforts.

SK Oh Jae-hyun is breaking through.
While Kim Sun-hyung was sidelined due to injury, he played as the starting point guard and averaged 11.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists. Since his debut, he has played in the game the most and scored the most points. Compared to the previous season, his average score has increased by nearly five points. Thanks to his good performance, he earned his first career national flag last month.

He was a leading candidate for MIP as his skills have significantly improved. Obviously, his skills have significantly improved compared to the season when he won the Rookie of the Year award. However, he was excluded from the MIP list due to KBL’s decision. He performed well and gained high expectations from fans, but his motivation disappeared due to the sudden change. SK manager Jeon Hee-chul, who belatedly learned this fact, also expressed his disappointment.

A KBL board meeting is being held.
No beautiful finish

Changes in the standard of the Sixman Award must also be observed. Up until now, there have been two cases where a player who received the Rookie of the Year award and MVP award has won the Sixman Award. Joo Hee-jung in the 2013-2014 season and Kim Joo-sung in the 2017-2018 season are the main characters. The two have demonstrated exemplary performances for younger generations during their long professional career. After their prime, they accepted the changes over time and stepped down as Sixman, creating one final spark. At that time, Joo Hee-jung gave the ace position to rookie Kim Sun-hyung and Kim Joo-sung to Do Kyung-min and Dionte Burton, and stepped back. Thanks to their support, the team was able to put in a good performance. 토토사이트

Due to the change in KBL’s standard, former MVP players cannot dream of a beautiful finish by winning the Six Man Award. Story is as important as victory in professional sports. However, such a change is taking away even the last dream of veteran players.

Of course, these changes can bring joy to many athletes. However, a prize is most valuable when a person deserves it. It is natural for a rookie award to steadily grow and for a player who received MIP and MVP to become a six-man because he or she is older. The KBL’s decision rejected natural changes and set the qualifications as its own standard. It eliminated the motivation and dreams that players have in the midst of change.
