Doosan snaps 5-game losing streak by beating Hanwha

Doosan snapped a five-game losing streak by beating Hanwha.

Doosan won 8-3 against Hanwha in the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League at Hanwha Life Eagles Park in Daejeon on Monday. Starting pitcher Gwak Been earned his career-high ninth win of the season with seven innings of two-hit ball, one walk, 10 strikeouts and one run, while two-run homers from Yang Seok-hwan and Yang Ji Hyun provided the offense. Yang hit a game-winning two-run shot in the second inning and Yang hit a two-run shot in the seventh inning.

Doosan, which had lost five straight after a franchise-record 11-game winning streak, started the first day of August on a high note by snapping the losing streak. They remained in third place with 45 wins, 41 losses, and one tie. Eighth-place Hanwha, which has lost three straight, is 37-46-4. Hanwha starter Moon Dong-joo pitched five innings of five-hit ball (one home run) with four strikeouts and two walks, but was unable to get any offensive support and took the loss.

Doosan’s homegrown ace snaps losing streak with 7-inning, 10K performance

Gwak Been pitched like a Doosan homegrown ace to end the losing streak. The right-hander pitched seven innings of two-hit ball (one homer), one walk, 10 strikeouts and one run to earn his ninth win of the season and lower his ERA from 2.44 to 2.34. The nine wins are her most in a single season, surpassing her eight wins last year.

He gave up a solo home run to Hanwha’s No. 2 hitter, Kim In-hwan, in the first inning. The third pitch, a 137-kilometer slider, was driven high and outside, and Kim In-hwan didn’t miss it, sending it over the right-field fence. A walk (Jung Eun-won), hit by pitch (Park Sang-un), and a hit by pitch (Lee Do-yoon) threatened to load the bases in the second inning, but he struck out Lee Jin-young with a 153-kilometer fastball.

In the third inning, it was all Kwak-Bin. He struck out Kim In-hwan with a curveball and Chae Eun-sung with a fastball to complete a three-hit shutout of the Hanwha center field lineup. In the fourth inning, Kwak gave up an error on a bunt by Moon Hyun-bin, but struck out Jung Eun-won and Nick Williams to keep the momentum going. A slider and a changeup were the deciding pitches, respectively.

After retiring three straight batters in the fifth inning by striking out Lee Jin-young on a curveball, Kwak-Bin induced three straight infield grounders in the sixth by walking Noh Si-hwan, Chae Eun-sung, and Jung Eun-won on 10 pitches. In the seventh, Williams was again fooled by Kwak-Bin’s curveball, striking out three straight batters. After three consecutive three-hit shutouts in the fifth through seventh innings, Kwak ended the game with 99 pitches. 68 strikes, 31 balls.

He dominated the Hanwha bats with his fastball, which topped out at 154km and averaged 150km (45), as well as his four-pitch mix of curve (21), slider (19), and changeup (14). Of his 10 strikeouts on the day, his fastball (4), curve (3), changeup (2), and slider (1) all induced swinging strikes.

Yang Suk-hwan and Yang Ji exploded with home runs…Heo Kyung-min and Saguaro Benkle too

The Doosan batting lineup, which had totaled 11 runs during the five-game losing streak and scored just 2.2 runs per game, came alive today. After giving up a run in the first inning, they answered right back in the second. After a leadoff single to left field, Yang Seok-hwan followed with a two-run double. He pulled the second pitch from Hanwha starter Moon Dong-joo, a 133-kilometer curveball, over the left field fence. It traveled 120 meters and was his 15th home run of the season.

Despite not getting another run off Moon Dong-joo until the fifth inning, the one-run lead held until the six-run eighth inning. In the top of the eighth, Yang’s two-run homer to left field exploded. Yang smashed a 145-kilometer fastball from Hanwha reliever Kang Jae-min over the low zone. A distance of 120 meters, his ninth home run of the season.

In the ensuing offense, Yang Seok-hwan doubled to left-center, Kang Seung-ho walked, and Yang Chan-yeol singled to load the bases before Kim Jae-ho drove a huge three-run shot to the left field fence. Jung Soo-bin also hit an RBI triple over the left field fence off reliever Yoon Dae-kyung. Yang went 4-for-3 with two RBIs, Yang Suk-hwan went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Jeong Soo-bin went 2-for-5 with one RBI to lead the offense.

Hanwha starter Moon Dong-ju pitched five innings of five-hit ball (one home run) with four strikeouts and two walks, but received no offensive support and dropped to 7-6 on the season. He threw a fastball (48 pitches) that topped out at 158 mph and averaged 152 mph, along with a slider (21), curve (17) and changeup (3). The second pitcher, Lee Tae-yang, pitched two scoreless innings with no walks and three strikeouts, but Kang Jae-min, who came on in the eighth inning, gave up six runs on five hits (one home run) and one walk in ⅔ innings.

Meanwhile, in the eighth inning, Doosan’s offense had a bench-clearing incident. In the eighth inning, with Doosan leading 8-1, a fastball from Hanwha pitcher Yoon Dae-kyung hit Heo Kyung-min in the back. A furious Heo turned toward the pitcher and players from both teams rushed the field for a confrontation. Hanwha pitchers Jung Woo-ram and Jang Min-jae calmed Heo down, and the bench clearing was completed without any major confrontation. 스포츠토토
