China fails to advance to Women’s World Cup round of 16 with 1-6 loss to England
China has been knocked out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia-New Zealand 2023 after a heavy defeat to England in its final group match.
China fell 1-6 to England in the third match of the tournament’s Group D at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide, Australia, on Monday (July 1).
With one win, two losses, and three points, China finished third in the group and failed to advance to the round of 16. It is the first time China has been eliminated in the group stage of a Women’s World Cup after qualifying. The victorious England advanced to the round of 16 with a three-game sweep. England will face Nigeria in the Round of 16.
England scored three goals in the first half to take control. Alessia Russo, Lauren Hemp and Lauren Janes scored in quick succession to give England a 3-0 lead at halftime.
China responded with a goal 12 minutes into the second half in front of their home fans. England committed a handball foul in the box and Wang Shuang converted the penalty.
After seemingly surrendering the lead, England bounced back. In the 30th minute, Lauren James rattled the net with a precise foot on a cross from the other side.
Dejected, China conceded two more goals. Chloe Kelly in the 32nd minute and Rachel Daly in the 39th minute broke down the Chinese defense.
At the same time, Denmark won the Denmark-Haiti match 2-0 at Rectangular Stadium in Perth, Australia.
Pernille Harder scored a penalty kick in the 21st minute to give Denmark the lead before Sane Troelsgård added a goal nine minutes into second-half stoppage time to seal the deal.
Denmark advances to the round of 16 as the second best team in the group with 2 wins, 1 loss and 6 points. They will face co-hosts Australia in the round of 16. Haiti, making its first-ever appearance at the tournament, was eliminated after three games. 안전놀이터
