AG gold ‘strongest pairing’ Shin Yubin-Jeon Hee reach WTT Star Contender final
Women’s doubles pair Shin Yoo-bin (Korean Air) and Jeon Jeon-hee (Mirae Asset Securities), the world No. 1 duo that brought South Korean table tennis its first gold medal in 21 years at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, have reached the final of the World Table Tennis (WTT) Star Contender Lanzhou.
Shin and Jeon advanced to the final of the women’s doubles event with a 3-0 (11-6 11-5 11-4) victory over Hong Kong’s sixth-ranked duo of Du Hoi Kem and Chu Cheng-ju on Saturday in Lanzhou, China.
However, Shin Yubin was eliminated from the remaining events.
Lim Jong-hoon (KEUR) and Shin Yubin (#3) fell 2-3 (8-11 12-14 11-5 11-4 9-11) to Harimoto Tomokazu-Hayata Hina (JPN) in the quarterfinals of the Mixed Doubles after a close full-set match.
In the round of 16 of the women’s singles, Shin Yubin (No. 8) was upset by Harimoto Miwa (No. 17) 1-3 (11-4 4-11 5-11 9-11).
All Korean players were eliminated on the day except for the pair of Shin Yubin and Jeon Jeon-hee.
Jeon Jeon-hee (No. 33) and Joo Cheon-hee (No. 21-Samsung Life) fell in the round of 16 in the women’s singles.
The 342nd-ranked team of Joo Cheon-hee and Choi Hyo-joo (Korea Horse Society) fell in the women’s doubles quarterfinals.
In the men’s doubles quarterfinals, the eighth-ranked pair of Lim Jong-hoon-Ahn Jae-hyun (Korea Exchange) lost a close full-set match to Xu Yingbin-Lin Shidong (China-18th), 2-3 (11-7 11-13 1-11 11-9 6-11), while Cho Seung-min-Sang-soo (Samsung Life) (49th) also stopped their challenge.
