Kakao refused to disclose details behind the cause of a 54-minute disruption to its KakaoTalk instant messenger app Tuesday morning, as the company did after a six-minute outage of the service Monday afternoon and another six-minute error on May 13.The IT firm just cited an internal system error as the reason for unstable message transmissions and delays in logging in to KakaoTalk via personal computers between 8:30 and 9:24 a.m. on Tuesday. A day earlier, it also attributed a similar service disruption between 2:52 and 2:58 p.m. to an internal system error.When the same problem occurred between 1:44 and 1:50 p.m. on May 13, the company mentioned system maintenance as the reason.“It is difficult for us to explain details about the internal system errors, as they are technical matters,” a Kakao official said.

Kakao vowed in December 2022 to take measures to prevent the recurrence of a service disruption, as a nationwide chaos resulted from the longest-ever malfunction of KakaoTalk and the company’s other services after a fire damaged its main data center on Oct. 15, 2022.Back then, the tech firm promised large-scale investments to hire experts and upgrade its infrastructure.“We promise to ensure that everyone’s daily life is not interrupted,” the company said at that time. “The recent incident has reinforced our commitment to our core mission of providing our users with stable and reliable services.”Kakao founder Kim Beom-su made a public apology in October 2022, when he was summoned to a National Assembly audit as a witness. The company was also embroiled in lawsuits from KakaoTalk users who claimed financial damages from the outage.“Temporary disruptions to online services are inevitable,” the Kakao official said. “It seems that we are drawing more attention than other online service providers, as we have a significant number of users.”The monthly active users of KakaoTalk reached 49 million during the first quarter.
