How time flies! The ‘strongest defensive duo’ with a combined ‘1005 games’

The years are cruel.

There are two center backs who have protected the back of Real Madrid in the past. Sergio Ramos and Pepe. Between them, they played a total of 1,005 games for Real Madrid. Ramos has played 671 games and Pepe has played 334.

Ramos was once considered one of the best center backs in the world. He was beloved by Real Madrid fans for his active defensive leadership, physical commitment, and precise ball distribution. Playing for Real Madrid since 2005, Ramos has won numerous trophies with the club. In 2021, he parted ways with Real Madrid after 16 years to join Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

In the summer of 2023, he returned to Sevilla, the club where he made his professional debut. Ramos, now 38 years old, has played a total of 37 games this season, scoring seven goals and providing one assist. However, his return came with an expiring contract. Ramos parted ways with Sevilla after this season and is looking for a new team.

The situation is a little better for Pepe, a former Real Madrid defender alongside Ramos. Pepe, who played for Real Madrid since 2007, partnered with Ramos in the central defense line. In 2017, he left Real Madrid to join Turquilla’s Besiktas.

With this move, soccer fans predicted that Pepe was preparing to retire. However, all of these predictions were spectacularly wrong. In 2019, Pepe joined FC Porto, a powerhouse in his country’s league, and has been playing consistently for the club until this season.

What’s more, he’s 41 years old and is currently competing for Portugal at UEFA Euro 2024. He became the oldest player in Euro history to start a Euro 2024 match 사설토토 when he started against the Czech Republic in the first leg of their Group F match on June 19th.

While Pepe is showing no signs of rust compared to Ramos, he is set to become a free agent this summer. “Pepe will leave Porto as a free agent this summer,” transfer market expert Nicolo Skrera recently wrote.

Interestingly, the “strongest defensive pairing” that once protected Real Madrid’s back line will be unemployed side by side. Now, both players will be looking for new teams.
