Thailand wins 3-1 over Singapore, ‘eliminated’ from second round by one goal

Thailand missed the chance to qualify for the third round of the FIFA Confederations Cup North America 2026. China survived the World Cup qualifiers by finishing second in their group with a fishy result.
Thailand defeated Singapore 3-1 in the final match of the second round of qualifying for the North American Championship at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
The result leaves Thailand with two wins, two draws, two losses, and eight points, tied on goal difference with second-place China (two wins, two draws, two losses, and eight points) but out of qualifying. Thailand finished third in the group on a winner-take-all basis with one draw and one loss in their two meetings with China. Singapore finished last with one draw, five losses and one point.
China lost 0-1 to South Korea in the sixth match of the second qualifying round at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on the same day. After defending for most of the match, China fell victim to a late goal from Lee Kang-In (Paris Saint-Germain).
China advanced to the third round after losing both meetings with South Korea in World Cup qualifying (0-3, 0-1). In the final match, Thailand had a chance to pull off an upset, but ultimately failed to overturn the standings and were eliminated.
Never trailing, Thailand brought out all of their mainstays, including Supachok Sarachat (Consadore Sapporo), J-League veterans Chanathip Songkrasin (Pathum United) and Supanat Mueanta (OH Leoburn). We needed at least three goals, so we went out aggressively.
In the first half, things were looking good. Thailand took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute through Mueanta. They poured it on against a subdued Singapore.

After squandering their chances, Thailand conceded the equalizer to Geyi Singapore. In the 12th minute of the second half, Iksan Pandy (Patum United) found the top right corner of the net with a powerful right footed shot from long range. Thailand added one more goal. In the 41st minute, Jaroensak Wongorn (Muangthong United) scored Thailand’s third goal. Thailand needed one more goal to eliminate China.
There were seven minutes of second-half stoppage time. Singapore blatantly stalling for time. The referee didn’t blow the whistle until seven minutes into the extra time.
No additional goals were scored. The match ended with a 3-1 victory for Thailand.
South Korea finished first in the group and earned a spot in the third round of qualifying with Japan and Iran. They inherited a relatively easy draw.
